Hamas says ready to maintain direct talks with US but accuses Trump of double standards

In a recent interview with CNN, Mushir al-Masri, a senior official with Hamas in Gaza, accused US President Donald Trump of practicing “blatant double standards” in his approach to the ongoing crisis in the region, particularly with regard to the release of hostages held in Gaza. The comments come following revelations that the White House has engaged directly with Hamas in an effort to negotiate the release of hostages, breaking the longstanding US policy against negotiating with groups deemed as terrorist organizations.

Al-Masri stated that any meetings with US officials aim to achieve stability in the region, end the war on Gaza, and put a stop to what he described as “aggression against our Palestinian people.” He claimed that an agreement with Hamas is essential for achieving this stability, emphasizing that these discussions are critical for a ceasefire and for addressing the humanitarian crisis resulting from the ongoing conflict.

Since the attacks on October 7, 2023, Israel has refused to engage in direct talks with Hamas and has committed to eliminating the group. Despite this, the prospect of negotiations has changed after the US’s direct involvement. Al-Masri pointed out the imbalance in Trump’s demands, noting that while he talks about Israeli hostages, he ignores the nearly 10,000 Palestinian prisoners currently held by Israel.

The context of this situation is crucial, as Israel insists Hamas extend the current ceasefire in exchange for the release of additional hostages, yet without a commitment to withdrawing its military presence. Amid this backdrop, Trump has continued to issue stark warnings to Hamas via his social media platform, Truth Social, declaring that there would be severe repercussions if hostages were not released.

Additionally, US envoy Steve Witkoff hinted at potential military actions against Hamas if they fail to comply with US demands, exacerbating fears of increased violence in the region. Al-Masri criticized Trump’s threats, suggesting they provide cover for Israel’s actions against Palestinians and reflect a bias that undermines the United States’ potential role as a neutral mediator in the ongoing conflict. He warned that intimidation tactics would be ineffective, asserting that attempts to forcibly displace the people of Gaza would be futile.

In a broader context, Trump’s administration’s rhetoric has raised concerns over the US’s position in the Middle East conflict, with al-Masri urging for neutrality and fairness in mediation, rather than the apparent alignment with Israel’s policies. He cautioned that ongoing aggressive policies would only escalate tensions further, calling upon the US leadership to reconsider its stance and approach to peace negotiations in Gaza and its implications for the Palestinian people.

As the situation in Gaza remains dire, with significant humanitarian needs and political tensions high, the discourse surrounding the negotiations and Trump’s statements will likely continue to play a critical role in the unfolding events.
